Growing (Food) Pains

July 16, 2018

Good morning.  I'm off to a late start today because I tried sleeping a bit longer.  The night was warm and it made sleeping a bit uncomfortable.  Even Pogo spent the night going from bed to couch to chair and back again.  I don't like to fall asleep with the A/C on because then I'll wake up really sick.  By early morning, we were both super tired and finally fell asleep.

Today is going to be warm.  It's already eighty degrees, and should be climbing up into the higher eighties.  There is a teeny tiny breeze though, so that helps a bit.  Even though the summer heat is a bit too warm for me, the nice part is being able to keep windows open to let in breezes and fresh air.

I'm beginning to wonder just how good an idea the greenhouse is.  Yesterday, I picked my ripe tomatoes, all "one" of them.  Mind you, these are cherry tomatoes so they are no bigger than your thumb.  This little tomato that I picked is so very valuable.  I've spent more than $100 dollars to grow this tomato.  There was the greenhouse, special vitamins and growing foods, special soil, large planters, tall columns for the plants to cling to, plus the starter plants.

So what do you think?  Should I eat this prized tomato?  Should I give it to someone special?  Or maybe should I bronze it to commemorate my successful planting season?  I found this image on the web and just had to have it to share here.  Yup, this is me!

I didn't actually plant the tomatoes to save money, mostly just to enjoy watching them grow.  You know, if I had to live off the food from my own gardens, I'd have starved to death a long time ago.  My green thumb (which I really did have in my younger days) took a wrong turn somewhere along the way and just doesn't work anymore.

Just so you know, my beautiful peppers (all two of them) are still the same size they were last month.  But now they are turning orange, which they are supposed to do as they ripen.  Tell me, what in the world am I going to do with two beautiful orange peppers that are no bigger around than a quarter?  Maybe I could win a prize for the world's smallest Bell Peppers?

At least the petunias in the small kiln planter are growing nicely.  As long as I give them a drink of water every other day or so, they do just fine.

Enough of my gardening skills.  Do any of you collect Precious Moments figurines?  I don't, but I think they are really beautiful.  I found this ad in my mail, and thought I'd share it.  Isn't this just adorable?

It's lunch time, and Pogo has been giving me hints for the past half hour that he might possibly be wasting away from want of food.  I don't think so Pogo.  You know, last night he ate a plate full of pork lo mein and pork egg foo young for supper.  He even had a little bit more of it for his late night snack.  So believe me, this little fellow isn't going to be wasting away from lack of food any time soon!

Now I think I should try to do a few things around here while I have a bit of energy.  So, till tomorrow, Y'all have a fantabulous day.

Hugs, Edna B.

This post made me giggle! We spend SO much money growing our tomatoes! We have gotten more than one but still it is more costly than buying them at the Farmer's Market:) Enjoy your day dear friend, I say "eat that tomato"! HUGS!

Edna,
Savor that tomato... all of one bite, but my mouth just waters thinking about that burst of flavor. Between you and Sean Of The South talking about tomatoes and Tomato Sandwiches I am having tomato cravings lol... Eat the Tomato... lol

Oh yes I do remember the Precious Moments Sunday comics and the collections as well. My ex sister in law had a huge curio cabinet filled with them as gifts and ones she bought for special moments. I always tried to get her one for Christmas but I lost count on what she had and once bought one she already had so I was thankful when I could gift her with a gift card for them instead and she could pick out which one she loved.
Every year at Christmas my husband and I took the kids to the Festival Of Lights and they had several sections each Christmas with a wooden display of Precious Moments. Each one was in memory of a child that had gone over the bridge to heaven. It always made me tear up and was so gorgeous.

Talk to you soon... Hugs to you and my not starving little Pogo... He must have loved his Chinese Food Treat... haha... little stinker... xxx Beth

Hilarious your story about your tomatoe! And I feelabout the same at the moment with my tomatoes. However, we have several ones rather big and another species which is small (called Tiny Tim)one and one Tiny Tim is almost there on colour and another sepcies one is getting some color!
But yes, it isn;t for the reducing costs that we try to grow some food, it is just fr fun and we are already proud to have some result LOL!
On to your next post
