Memories Of The "Wish Book"

October 6, 2019

Good morning.  My goodness, tis 41F degrees right now.  Brrr.  What happened to Fall?  My weather app says that temps will get up to maybe the mid sixties later this afternoon before dropping back down.  The sun is shining though, so that's a plus.

Well, I got one tiny package yesterday, but it was not to be a  gift.  It's a tiny rosebush that I ordered.  It has three different colored roses in it (so it says) and it is tiny so I can plant it in a pot and keep it indoors till next Spring.   I'll have to take a photo to show the different colors in this plant.  I hope it makes it till Spring.  I' m not doing so good with my goldfish plant.

I came across this image on the web and just had to download it.  Oh my, the memories it brings!

Do you remember how we waited for this "Wish Book" every year?  It would arrive, I think, around September or October.  Once everyone was in bed and asleep at night, I would sit down with this wish book and make out my Christmas order.  The next day I would send off my order and wait for it to be ready for pickup at the store.

Then I would wait again for everyone to be asleep at night, and wrap and tag everything and  tuck it all away in a closet.  Now all I had to do was make my payments every week and it would all be paid for before Christmas.

Sears and J.C. Penny were my go to catalogues.  They had everything we needed and it was all priced reasonably so that we could afford it.  All that changed many years later.  Such a shame.  I really miss these wonderful old catalogues.  (and stores)

My daughter Audrey posted this on FaceBook, and of course I had to borrow it to share with you here.

What an awesome idea for some of the ladies in my riding group.  Much as I would love to join in on the fun, my last attempts at riding on a motorized object did not turn out so good.  I guess Pogo and I will have to stick with my trusty old broom.  It has done us well all these years.  I imagine Audrey will have one these new fangled rides.  Who knows?  Maybe if there is room on the back of it she'll let me and Pogo hop a ride with her?  Hmmmm.

These last couple of days have been rather lazy for me.  I did, however,  do a few loads of laundry.  That, plus cooking and washing some dishes, was the extent of my achievements.  Yesterday I never even went on my laptop to check my email or do any blog reading.  I'll have to do that when I finish typing this post.

This morning I did take some meat out of the freezer to thaw.  Later I'll make some meat sauce for pasta.  This last time that I did my grocery shopping, I made sure to pick up some frozen meals that contained at least a daily minimum of sodium.  This way, I'll be sure to get my minimum every day.

All year long I've been being very good and getting rid of all the cardboard boxes that come in.  Now that I need a few of them, I don't have them.  Go figure!  Ah well, it's too early to mail any of the holiday packages anyway so I'll manage.  Starting next week though, I want to start packaging up whatever I can and set it aside till it is mailing time.

Do you buy extra bread and freeze it?  I do, but I never thought to do this.  I'll have to give it a try on the next loaf that I put in the freezer.

Before I get started on this lovely new day, let me post another "oldie but goodie" quick page.  I hope you can use it.

Now I'm off to make a fresh cup of coffee and catch up on my blog reading.  So, till tomorrow, Y'all have a fantabulous day.

Hugs, Edna B.

Good Morning, I know your coffee tastes good on such a cool morning! Best wishes with the
tri-color rose bush. I remember the Sears Christmas wish book. My sis and I spent hours looking and circling things we loved as kids. Thx for the tip about freezing bread. Thank you for your kind comment on my blog. We are trying to get to feeling better. God bless your day. HUgs to Pogo.

My mom always froze loaves of bread and I copied off her. I usually buy 3 or 4 loaves of bread for the freezer. I have never did the paper towel but either way when you take it out of the freezer, it is as fresh as you just bought it. I learned a lot from mom. I always said, if it worked out for her, it would work out for me. (lol) It saves lots of trips to the store. Another thing you can do too. If you are not using very many slices at a time, just take some out and put in a freezer bag. You will save a lot of bread that way.

My company is not back yet but they will be back soon and on their way home. I am still in the bed and resting until they ring the door bell. I hope you and Pogo have a great Sunday.

I'm going to try that paper towel when freezing bread tip, as I live alone and can not eat all of a loaf of bread so always freeze some. My sister and I were allowed to circle what we would like for Christmas in the Sears wish book. It was fun to do and to dream, and that didn't mean we would get what we chose, but it was hints for our parents.

How I loved the Wish Book. I was always the first girl in our family that still lived at home that got to look and wish first. My younger sisters didn't love the wish book as much as I did tho.

I was lucky that Walmart still allowed Lay A Way at the time mine were growing up. I put things on lay a way all year thru. I really miss that. They do it fir a few weeks now but when you are only paid once a month no way to pay weekly lol. Oh well I have Amazon Prime lol.

We go thru bread fast around here but I do this for my Rye bread. I break it down and put in a paper towel and freeze it in a zip lock baggie. It really does come out fresh. I am especially picky about my bread so it works for me.

I just bet that Audrey will pick you and Pogo up and let you ride on All Hallows Eve. She is just that kind hearted daughter... And Deeann is too of course... Big hugs to you and Pogo... xxx

My late sister and I called the Sears Wishbook the 'nis n 'nis book. We would sit on the floor, side by side and flip through the pages, pointing at things and shouting "I want nis and nis and nis (this and this and this)!

What great memories.
