Happy Mother's Day To Moms And Stepmom's Everywhere

I'm typing this a bit early (late Saturday evening) because I'm leaving early in the morning to go out to breakfast with Deanne and Eddie and the kids.  Tis Mother's Day, and I'm a very lucky mom.

Longing For The Sunshine And Warmer Temps

Good morning.  I'd love to say that it is sunny and warm today, but alas, it is not to be.  I'm getting the gloomy doldrums.  These old bones need sunshine and warm temps!!!   Rain and cold go away, Pogo and I want to play.

I was watching the news (Morning Express With Robin Meade) this morning, but it seems to repeat itself every thirty minutes or so.  Sort of like a news loop.  So after not finding much else of interest to watch, I finally switched over to the BUZZR channel.  This one features all the old TV games from the 60's and 70's, and is quite fun to watch.

Last night, I worked on the Café Latte afghan for a while, and now there are only five more rows to go till it is finished.  This will make three done, and only two more to go.  (Ooooh, don't say anything, but the sun just poked it's lovely face out for a brief moment.  Maybe there's hope yet?)

I have a new photo of Pogo to share.  Every afternoon, he sits in front of his door and waits for Joe to come home from work (so that he can get his turkey treat).  Sometimes though, he falls asleep on his chair and almost misses seeing Joe come home.  So yesterday, he curled up on the blanket in front of the door and napped till it was time to watch for Joe. 

I dug into my photo archives again to see what was blooming on this day four years ago.  Hmmm, I haven't seen any dandelions at all so far this year.

I'm noticing a lot of differences in what is blooming now from one town to another.  One town over, there are beautiful azaleas in bloom.  Not so in my neighborhood.  There is a gorgeous pink magnolia tree in bloom a few streets away, and yet in two towns over, a gorgeous yellow magnolia tree is already losing all it's blossoms. 

The beautiful blossoming cherry tree that I planted a few years ago is finally getting some flowers on it.  I'll try to take some photos of it over the weekend.  It's amazing how tall this tree is getting.  Maybe I can find some photos in my archives from when we first planted it.  It will be interesting to see the difference from then to now.

Well, there's really not much happening here.  I'm not very energetic when it is cloudy outside.  Soon though, I'll have to perk up a bit.  There's grocery shopping to be done, and I need to start making up my list.  I also have to pack up a box of new clothes to send to my daughter Laura Jean.  I enjoy picking out pretty things for her each Spring. 

Now I'm going to make a fresh cup of coffee, and catch up a bit on my morning blog reading.  So, till Sunday, Y'all have a fabulous weekend.

A Fun Shopping Day

Good morning.  Today is cloudy and even cooler than yesterday.  The high today isn't expected to get higher than 45F degrees.  Gosh, this is putting a crimp in my garden fun.  I was so hoping to get a bit of work and planting done this weekend.  Ah well, maybe it will warm up soon.

Yesterday I did a bit of shopping.  I got two more bags of birdseed, and two huge bags of garden soil.  Alas, I could not pass by all the beautiful plants without buying something.  So I finally chose a dusty rose colored columbine, a gorgeous white rose plant, and a "Sparkle & Shine" yellow rose plant.  I'm sorry this first photo isn't very good, but I was outside in my jammies taking these photos and I was hurrying. 

I also bought a couple more pots so that I can re-plant a couple of my plants in to bigger pots.  The garden tools were looking pretty good too, so I picked up a couple of new garden rakes and some new fencing to go around the small gardens.  I'd say it was a pretty good shopping day.

Pogo was his charming self, and met lots of new people while we were out shopping.  He's such a cutie pie that people keep coming over to pet him.  Of course, Pogo loves all the extra attention.

Today will be a lazy day.  Maybe I'll do a load of laundry and mop the kitchen floor.  Joe and I will either do the food shopping later this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon.  That's about all the fun I have planned till the weekend.  I'm hoping that the weather is sunny and warmer over the weekend.

The Sun Is Playing Peek-A-Boo Today

Good morning.  Tis another cloudy day here.  It's a little bit bright, so maybe we'll get to see a speck of sunshine today.  The weather man says we're going to have more rain.  At least it's not too cool.  The temperature is currently 51F degrees.  We'll just have to wait and see what the day brings. 

Today Pogo and I are planning to go shopping at Ocean State Job Lot.  We need to pick up some birdseed.  Oh my, as I type the sun has peeked through the clouds.  It was only for a few seconds, but at least I know it is trying.

I also want to pick up some planting soil and a couple of large planters.  Maybe we can also take a trip to Lowes or Home Depot.  Hmmm, it already sounds like a fun day.  I'm hoping to plant a few new bulbs this weekend.  These beautiful Lollypop lilies were a gift from Kyra, and I can't wait to see them bloom. 

Pogo isn't too interested in breakfast this morning.  Do you suppose it has anything to do with the fact that he got me up at 3 a.m. to make him a snack?  Once his little belly was full up with hamburger, he went back to bed and right off to dreamland.  The sound of him snoring softly is music to my ears.

Pogo Has A Great Check Up

Good morning.  Tis gray and damp with temps in the upper 40's.  We should get up to around 50F degrees today.  It's a good day to stay indoors and find some fun mischief to get into.

Yesterday, it was raining by the time Pogo and I left to go to his doctor appointment.  He has gained a few ounces and is in good health.  This is the kind of news we all want to hear from a doctor. 

I dug into my photo archives for a few rainy day photos.  There is something really beautiful about raindrops clinging to a leaf or petal.  I took these photos four years ago today.  (5/3/12)

Last night I worked on the scarlet red afghan for a while, but now I'm thinking that I'll have to rip out the last eighteen rows because I don't like the way the variegated yarn is working up.  This is not making me very happy.  However, I guess I'll have to do it.  If I'm not happy with what I make, I can't give it as a gift. 

Today I have no special plans.  I'll just deal with whatever pops up.  After I do the dishes, of course.  I'll have to ask SIL Eddie what my chances are of fitting a dish washer in here.  Seems like my hands are always in water.  Hmmm, it may never happen, but it's a nice thought.

Some Fun With Pine Cones

Good morning.  I guess today is going to be another cloudy day, with temps in the mid 50's.  We might even see a bit of sunshine now and then.  During the night, we had a little bit of rain.  Everything is beginning to look so green.  My "leafy" trees are putting on their leafy spring green look.  I love it!!

My yard, on the other hand, is looking like a pine cone garden.  They are everywhere!  I hate to just rake them all up and toss them out, so I've started looing on Google to see what they can be used for.  So far, I've found a great craft website that has lots of ideas for making things from the cones.  They have other crafts too, so check them out.  http://www.craftaholicsanonymous.net

Here are a few of the ways to use your pine cones for Holiday/event decorations.

Before using the cones for crafts, you need to clean and dry them.   First, leave the cones dry, put them on a foil covered baking sheet and spread them out in a single layer.  Bake them in a pre-heated oven at 200 degrees for about 20-30 minutes.  This will have any bugs living inside the cones crawling out.  You don't want bugs in your crafts.  You might want to spray the cones with a little acrylic at this point to protect them as they are pretty fragile.

Next you want to wash the cones in a sink full of warm water with 1/2 cup to 1 cup of vinegar.  Let them soak for 20 or 30 minutes.  Lay down two or three layers of newspapers on the workspace that you will be drying the cones on.    The cones should be fully opened when they are completely dry.  (cones close up when wet, and are open when dry)  Have fun.

Happy May Day

Good morning.  Today is cloudy and temps will only climb to the mid 50's today.  Still, it's not a bad day for Spring.  The sun can't shine here every day.  Some days it has to shine somewhere else so other folks can enjoy it too.

Would you believe, it's already May?  Happy May Day everybody.  Gosh, I have so much to do before next winter.  Here's hoping I get it all done.  Go ahead and laugh, but time has a way of rushing right by when we least expect it.  Here's the May page from my calendar. 

I think I mentioned recently that I had one of my photos done up on canvas.  They arrived, and I'm very happy with them.  However, I spotted the tiniest (almost noticeable) spot on one of them, and called the printing company to find out how I could clean the spot off without hurting the photo. 


Folks, this company is awesome.  Not only did they tell me how I could try to wash the spot off, but the representative told me "However, we'd rather just replace your item.  We'll have it out to you in about a week."   Now I call that fabulous service.  The name of this company is Easy Canvas Prints.  Give them a try, you'll be quite happy with them.  Just click on their name and it will take you right to their web site.

When the tree limbs were being trimmed the other day, I picked a sprig from one of the branches so that I could photograph the baby cones.  I never really thought much about them, but they are quite interesting and attractive.

I have to share a funny (or maybe not so funny) story with you.  Aside from the fact that Pogo did not want his peanut butter flavored birthday cake, I sent half of it over to Sassy (Dee's little doggie).  Sassy will eat just about anything.  Except this birthday cake!!  She sniffed it over really good, and then just sat there looking up quite confused at Deanne.  Sort of like "What am I supposed to do with this?"  I guess I'm not much of a baker!!

I was checking out some cute planters in one of my new catalogues, and I found this really adorable giraffe planter.  I'm thinking this would look fabulous on my new porch.  (assuming the porch gets built). 

Yesterday was a fairly quiet day.  I paid a few bills and evicted one small colony of dust bunnies.  For a while, I read my new book.  (The Book of Random Oddities)   No matter how old I get, I still find it quite fun to learn new things every day.

Later today I'm going to go through my "gift drawer" to see what I can cross off my list.  Then I think I'm going to wrap and tag whatever I can.  This might save me a lot of work next Fall.
