What A Nice Surprise - Fireflies!

July 7, 2014

Good morning.  It's a bit cloudy at the moment, but then it is only 5:30 a.m.  I'm sure the sun will be shining brightly and the temps will rise to muggy hot hot in just another hour or two.  It's my favorite morning of the week.  Monday!!!

Last night the little darling (the Mrs) was in such a wicked snit, that I already decided to take next weekend off.   Her family is not very happy about it, but I've already decided to take the time off.   My Pogo (and me) will be oh so happy!

Last night, something outside the kitchen window caught my eye.  My goodness, there were tiny little fireflies lighting up in the bushes outside.  I haven't seen fireflies since I was a little girl.  Of course, I was so excited that I grabbed my camera and tried to get a photo of them.

Now mind you, it was dark outside, I'm shooting through a very textured (dirty outside) window, and the flash kept coming on.  However, I did end up with one photo.  It's not my best shot, but after fixing the color a bit to get rid of the flash glare, you can definitely see the little fireflies.

There are two on the right that are shining really bright, and one on the left that is not quite so bright.  I've put in arrows to point them out.  Now I know that this is not earth shattering, but it's a first for me, and I'm quite pleased.

Today is also Mandarin Orange Monday #100, and I have a couple of nice "orange" photos to share.  This first one is my little pride and joy, Pogo.  He was relaxing in his little bed, yet keeping an eye on me to see what I was doing.

The next photo shows some of the beautiful orange squash blossoms that we have in our little veggie garden.   The bucket this plant is growing in is also orange, from Home Depot.  I absolutely love the yellow summer squash.   Boil it up, put on a pat of butter, a little salt & pepper, and ohhhhh myyyy!

Today will be rather quiet for me.  Aside from a little bit of household stuff, I'm going to mostly just chill out, watch a bit of TV and crochet.  I want to get these last four afghans finished up before the end of next month.  The turquoise one is almost finished;  the red, white and blue one is half finished; and the navy blue one and the lavender one are both about one third done.

After these are finished, I want to make some squares with some of the left over yarns.  I can set these aside and put them all together later to make another afghan.  I have a couple other smaller projects going that will be holiday gifts (if I ever get them finished).

Speaking of holidays, on my way to work last night, guess who I saw?  C'mon, guess!  I was coming out of McDonalds after getting my iced coffee, and this person in a gorgeous deep cherry red truck stopped to let me out onto the street.  He had a round smiling face and a handsome white beard.

Can you guess yet?  Do you suppose that Santa vacations in my little town?  Maybe he has family here?  I mean, who else could it have been?  It looked just like him.  It really doesn't matter though, because just the thought of it had me singing a happy little tune all the way to work.

On that note, I will bid you adieu.  Till tomorrow, Y'all have a fantabulous day.

Hugs, Edna B.

I recently read on a Czech blog about fireflies. Already there, I wrote that I do not know at all, they look like fireflies. Lights, I saw a long time ago, but I do not know what is behind your light. Thank you for visiting my blog and for the comment. Sorry for my English, I writing help of Google Translator.

Oh the sweet memory of chasing fireflies as a child. There's something magical about the twinkling of their lights as they flit about the trees and bushes.
Good for you taking the weekend off - you need to take care of yourself first.
Still hot and sticky here as well, makes me yearn for that nice dry heat of the west again.

You know those are fairies don't you. We call them lightening bugs. Your photo makes them look like little light bulbs.
Right before surgery my nurse was asking me if they had them in Colorado. I looked at her seriously and told her they were fairies. She did a double take, hah, but then she smiled. She probably thought old white haired lady has already had the happy stuff.
Pogo has the sweetest face.

We get fireflies every year ... never even thought about trying to take a picture of them. I don't do well in the dark. My camera always wants to flash and that wipes out everything I want to capture. I'm impressed you were able to do it from the inside ... don't know how you got past the glare on the window from the flash ... you are something else.

Good that you are taking a weekend off. Old as she is, she doesn't have the right to be rude to the people who are there to help her. When is your birthday coming up? You are going to resign as of then, right? Can't come soon enough the way I see it.

Love your MOM pictures ... of course I always love Pogo, he is just adorable. But I have to agree with you on the summer squash .... Yummm and Double Yummm. I grew up on fresh from the garden vegies ... now I buy them at the farmers market, which is about the same except you don't know for sure when they were picked. Corn on the cob is my favorite and we have a farmer right close who grows supersweet and it is to die for. Can't wait ... hmmm, wonder how that is going to fit into my Switerland diet :(

I love that you are getting so much enjoyment out of your crocheting. Everyone should have a hobby that they love. Life is, afterall, too short to spend it doing things you don't like all of the time. I am feeling a little pressured to get rid of stuff ... it wouldn't be that hard if there were easy answers as to where it can go, but that is a struggle. I can gather things together, but some need to be sold for what they are worth and where is the market for that ... oh my. I wish I had thought of that when I was buying all of it. Well, it is dinner time around here so I need to head down to the kitchen. Will check in tomorrow ... Have a nice comfy evening, Edna and hugs to Pogo. Izzi is suffering from the heat ... she has been sluggish all day. I am hoping it is just the heat, but I am keeping an eye on her. Later, my friend ...

I have never seen a firefly... I hope that I do one day. And I hope I have a camera with me too. Well done for taking next weekend off! You obviously deserve it:)
I love your pic of Pogo..as always - and I too like to eat squash. Maybe I will photograph some - but don't have them in a nice orange pot like you.
I always enjoy reading about your day and your 'doings" when I visit, Edna. Thanks for being an important part of Mandarin Orange Monday #100:))

Oooohhh, FIREFLIES! I cannot rememeber EVER seeing them. It must have been a magic moment.
Great you will be free next weekend.
Just knowing it sets your mind at ease, doesn;t it?
Gosh, you still have to work on a lot of afghans! I just started on a sweater for myself, hope it will be good enough, it's in a bright green color.
Lovely flowers of your squash. And great idea to put them in an orange pot.
Raining here at the moment, it's okay, but also I hope it will get dry later this morning, have to go out to get some cat food and bread and such.
You have a lovely day, my friend.
Hugs
